Three Types of Dog Training

Positive reinforcement is based on the way animals learn inside specially designed chambers in a research lab. They don't work as well in real life. Plus, in order for reward-based training to be effective, you have to know how to change the pattern of reward, which takes years of study.

Pack leader methods are based on the idea that wolves will follow and obey their pack leader. But wolves form packs primarily to hunt large prey. And since even wild dogs, who seem to live in packs, are incapable of hunting large prey, they can't be said to form packs or have pack leaders.

Natural Dog Training, created by former police dog trainer Kevin Behan, is a form of training know as drive training, which has been used for years to train police dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, drug-detection dogs, and military dogs.

Drive training operates by accessing and utlizing various aspects of your dog's prey drive. Rather than reinforcing behaviors one at a time, or using dominance to keep your dog in line, drive training utilizes your dog's natural drives and instincts creating a powerful desire to obey you.
